Osteoporosis is a common disease that weakens bones. World Osteoporosis Day 2016 theme is “Love Your Bones – Protect Your Future.” As bones weaken, the risk of sudden and unexpected fractures increases. Until a fracture occurs, there are typically no signs or symptoms. Broken bones may lead to chronic pain. Osteoporosis is more common as we age. As we age, we are at an increased risk of falling. Falling typically leads to fractures. There are also many health problems and a few medical procedures as well as medications that increase the likelihood of osteoporosis. The most common fractures are of the wrist, spine, shoulder and hip. It is more commonly seen in women, but is seen in men. The word “osteoporosis” is from the Greek word meaning “porous bones”.

There are two types of exercises that are important for building and maintaining bone density: weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises. Weight-bearing exercises help build bones, and keep them strong. Dancing, hiking, jogging/running, stair climbing, tennis, etc. are examples of weight-bearing exercises. You and your healthcare provider should decide whether high-impact or low-impact weight-bearing exercises are safe. Muscle-strengthening exercises are also known as resistant exercises. These can improve strength, balance, and flexibility.
