Many veterans who’ve served our country are now finding themselves in need of end-of-life care. Half of the men who die every day in the U.S. are veterans, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Millions of Americans who served in World War II and in Korea are now in their 80s and 90s and Vietnam veterans are reaching older age too. A large number of these vets are under the care of hospice across the country.
If a veteran has been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness by a VA physician with a life expectancy of 6 months or less (should the disease run its natural course) they qualify to receive hospice services. The VA offers needed hospice and palliative care services for all enrolled veterans, these services can be provided in both an inpatient setting or in the home. You can choose between agencies that are certified and among payers of the VA-CompassionCare Hospice is one of only three of these in Las Vegas. Support is provided for the veteran’s family and caregivers throughout their hospice journey, including bereavement support following the passing of the veteran for up to 13 months.
In addition, CompassionCare are proud members of the We Honor Veterans Program. Participating hospices of this program receive tools and resources that allow them to assess their current ability to serve Veterans and access educational resources for their staff, including: a military check-list which serves to identify Veterans and their needs, Veteran-to-Veteran volunteer programs, “pinning” ceremonies in which the Veteran receives a special WHV pin in honor of their service, as well as educational and networking opportunities among hospice community partners.
End of life care costs can add up quickly, particularly for Veterans who may have healthcare challenges as a result of their dedication and service. VA benefits cover hospice services 100% (no out of pocket expense). America’s Veterans have done everything asked of them in their mission to serve our country and the least we can do is give back to them in their time of need.
