National Healthcare Decisions Day is April 16, 2016.

CompassionCare Hospice is supporting National Healthcare Decisions Day to inspire, educate, and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning. Advance care planning is a way to plan ahead for your medical care in case you cannot make your wishes known. All adults can benefit from thinking about what their healthcare choices would be if they are unable to speak for themselves.

Having an advance care plan is the best way to alleviate any confusion or questions among those speaking for you. It can be made at any time in your life. The best way to go about creating an advance care plan is to think about what you truly want. Talk with your doctor. Talk with your family. For many people, it is very hard to start an advance care planning talk with your family and friends. Honesty is your best bet. Choose and clearly state who is responsible for making these decisions should you not be able to. But most importantly, document this. This is commonly called your advance directive. Your advance directive includes your living will and healthcare power of attorney. Advance directives are state specific forms. CompassionCare is here for you. We would love to answer any further questions.
