Hospice care is provided by a core group of professionals. Most hospices also have counselors, therapists, and other specialist. And some offer extra services like massage, pet therapy, and music specialists. In hospice, music is used as an art form to promote well-being with patients, families, and caregivers.
Music embraces different cultures and spirituality, and brings back fond memories to those on their end-of-life journey. It can also decrease feelings of isolation and provide a sense of familiarity and comfort with someone dealing with a life-limiting illness. When we are born the first outside sensation we experience is sound. When our bodies begin to shut down, it is the last to go. Music is processed in our brains in very complex ways, it can even help hospice patient’s deal with pain management, mood-affect, and self-awareness.
