Grieving Tips To Help You Move Forward

The start of a new year brings new beginnings for many of us – new goals, plans and dreams become our focus. However, for some, moving forward can be a challenge. Especially if one is grieving. You may be feeling a lot of strong or confusing emotions. Sometimes people who are grieving feel like something is wrong with them. It’s not. Grief is a natural way we cope with loss and understanding it may help you find comfort and healing.

Each of us is unique and can grieve differently. There are no set stages to grief, one day you may feel ok and then next totally lost again. Symptoms and emotions can often come in waves and this can make someone feel even more out of control, but there are things we can do to help.

Being gentle with ourselves is most important. Grieving is a process and it may take days, months, or even years for some-there is no set time. You may be affected in ways not expected like, trouble sleeping, headaches, loss or increased appetite, and even trouble concentrating. These are normal physical reactions. Getting adequate rest, eating healthier and exercise can help alleviate these things. Crying also helps let out pain. Tears relieve stress, lower body pressure and promote healing. On the emotional side we experience flows of frustration, anger, shock, guilt, and even relief.

Adjusting back to a “normal” life and routine can be rough. Tasks that used to be simple can feel overwhelming. Don’t be afraid to ask others for help. Sharing your thoughts and feelings can get you through this time as well, if this makes you uncomfortable you can also journal, paint/draw, or start a new hobby. If you are faithful try connecting with your spiritual community for support.

Grief is a complicated journey but trust that feelings will ease over time for many. One day, you will be able to move forward. “What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us”.
